Happo-One / ◎173cm / Light Snow2022.Jan.07

At 7:30 this morning, snowflakes could be seen occasionally fluttering around the resort base, while up at the Usagidaira Terrace, a weak north wind carried with it a more constant, yet light snowfall. The moderately firm, groomed snow surface of the Panorama Course (pictured) was topped with around 5 to 10cm of new snow. I very much enjoyed the feeling of making turns on the light, dry snow.

Due to strong winds, the lifts at the top of the resort were temporarily suspended. After hearing that announcement, all those who had been waiting in line for the Alpen Quad at once scattered, heading towards other areas like Riesen and Panorama. I made my way to the Olympic Course II (pictured), where I found roughly 10 to 15cm of fresh snow.

The underlying base of the Olympic Course II was relatively firm, with shallow tracks and uneven areas visible at the top of the course (2nd photo), changing to deeper undulations from the center of the run (pictured) on down. The flat light conditions made it tough to distinguish the variations in the snow surface, and I noticed skiers taking their time and making each of their turns carefully, one at a time.

I spoke with a father of a family from Kanagawa Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “I love your site! Our 4-year-old daughter tried out skiing for the first time ever yesterday. The gentle slopes here in the Sakka area are perfect for kids to practice skiing.” The moderately soft, groomed snow surfaces of Sakka, Shirakaba and the bottom of Kokusai were dusted with around 5cm of new snow. The Alpen Quad lift did eventually get moving around 9:15.
