Today was the second calm, sunny day since the start of the new year. Hikers and backcountry skiers were sharing the line for the gondola this morning, waiting for the resort to open. Cold January temperatures have continued, and with the clear skies overnight the mercury dropped below -10℃, and getting off the gondola I noticed the snow surface making that familiar powder squeak with each step I took.

I made some comortable, high-pace runs on the groomed areas of Usagidaira (first photo) and Panorama, as well as the top to mid section of the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured), where the powder snow surface was packed down firmly. I found the Usuba Slope, at the end of Riesen, to be in good condition with the man-made snow forming a moderately firm surface.

I also really enjoyed the first half of the Riesen Grat, where I found the groomed powder snow surface to be comfortably soft. The steep slope on the second half (pictured) was left entirely ungroomed, and with operatin of the Grat Quad suspended for the full day yesterday, it was entirely, fresh, new snow. There seemed to be around 30 to 40cm of light, fluffy snow packed slightly by the wind, and made for some great powder runs!

Things remained ungroomed through to the Central Course (pictured), where firm, small to mid-size bumps were forming on the slope surface. Central’s roundabout course was groomed to the width of a single grooming machine with the packed powder surface being moderately tight, while the groomed Shirakaba Slope seemed to have a slightly firmer powder snow surface, and made for some excellent turns.
