Happy New Year! With two rounds of heavy snow falling between 12/25 (Sat.) and 12/28 (Tue.), and later from 12/30 (Thurs.) to 1/1 (Sat.), we were able to greet the new year blessed with abundant snow, just as we had last year. On this morning where clear skies overnight led to temperatures plummeting all the way to -19℃, the resort was bathed in the beautiful glow of the rising sun’s rays (pictured).

The groomed surface of Riesen (pictured) was composed of the high-quality, fine powder snow that fell over the last few days and made that perfect powder squeak as you moved across it! I saw skiers bombing down the slope here at high speed one after another. On the other hand, I also observed a number of people congregating around the Alpen Quad, looking to take advantage of the fully-reset slopes, since the top lifts were closed the entire day yesterday.

Even though nearly a full day had passed since the snow had fallen, the cold temperatures preserved the soft snow conditions on the ungroomed areas of Usagidaira and Sodeguro (pictured). Those dropping in on snowboards and fat skis were treated to fantastic, floating runs.

I was greeted by the mother of a family from Kyoto with the familiar refrain, “I love your site!” The father, who caught up with his family a little later, pointed out that digging his edges in created a big, fluffy cloud of “snow smoke.” Later on I checked out the ungroomed Central and groomed Shirakaba areas and found that it was the same, excellent powder snow conditions as the top of the resort.
