Happo-One / ◎177cm / Snowy2021.Dec.31

Dry snow was silently falling as I stepped off the 8:00 gondola. With the snow that began before dawn yesterday continuing through to this morning, the top of the resort was covered in between 50 to 60cm of new snow, with the base areas receiving around 25cm. I decided to take advantage of the full-on powder conditions, and dropped in on the Omusubi off-piste area (pictured)!

Omusubi is a steep face sitting between the zigzagging Skyline cat track course and the Panorama cat track (“Panorin”). With temperatures dropping precipitously overnight, Happo’s signature, quality powder snow was back. One after another advanced skiers and riders dropped, screaming in delight as they went.

In addition to the fresh, high quality powder snow, the unique undulating terrain made for some thrilling runs. Of the three gates, GATE 2 was the one open this morning, and just before exiting, I encountered a number of tree branches that had not yet been fully buried, making it necessary for me to proceed carefully so as to not scratch or tear my outerwear .

The moderately-firm groomed snow surface of the Panorama Course was topped off by around 5cm of fresh snow. On the ungroomed Central Course, the moderately-packed uneven base was sitting under 20 to 25cm of new snow. Conditions on Shirakaba (pictured) were similar to those of Panorama, with around 3cm of new snow, and just like Panorama – I found the snow to be great for taking a few speedy runs.
