Happo-One / ◎120cm / Snowy2021.Dec.27

With the opening of Kitaone and Sakka, Happo has now finally opened up more than 80% of its terrain! However, the Olympic I and II Courses are still closed, which means that it’s not currently possible to cross over from Sakka to Shirakaba. The Alpen Quad got moving this morning on time at 8:30, and shortly after I noticed people dropping in alongside the Kurobishi No. 3 Pair and Alpen Quad lifts one after another.

A dry snow was falling at the top of the resort, blown about by a robust northwest wind. Today there was around 30cm of fresh snow on the Sodeguro area of the Usagidaira Slope (pictured)! I did find myself bottoming out occasionally on the underlying base, but with cold temperatures continuing since yesterday, it was excellent fine, powder snow conditions.

Around 3 to 5cm of new snow sat atop the moderately packed powder surface of the groomed Riesen Slalom Course (pictured); great conditions for some speedy, fun runs. Base and snow conditions were similarly good on the groomed areas of Usagidaira and Panorama, again with 3 to 5cm of fresh snow covering a relatively firm, powder base.

The route between Riesen and the gondola base station was characterized by a firm, wet snow surface. Only the steep section at the end of the Shirakaba Slope was left ungroomed, but the soft, uneven surface was capped by 10 to 15cm of fresh snow, and I found it easy to ski. Thanks to the recent heavy snows and low temperatures, the resort has been able to take full advantage of their snowmaking machines, I didn’t have to worry about any bushes or exposed areas as I skied.
