It was a calm morning, with soft sunlight breaking through thin clouds. It was noticeably less cold than yesterday, and from Usagi Terrace on down towards the base, winds were calm and temperatures were comfortable. I enjoyed a nice, fast run down the freshly-groomed Riesen Slalom Course (pictured), where the snow surface was moderately firm from top to middle, and even firmer towards the bottom.

At the top of the resort, there were occasional strong gusts of wind blowing from the west. The snow surface on the groomed area alongside the Kurobishi 2 Quad (pictured) was composed of powder snow and was a little softer than Riesen. I got in some nice, wide turns on the broadly-groomed slope.

Just before 9:00 (2nd & 3rd photos), clouds began to build and thicken in the sky. Around an hour later, at 10:00, the Nakiyama Snowland opened for the first time this season! And tomorrow, 12/25 (Sat.), at 8:45, the Grat Quad Lift will begin moving and the Riesen Grat Course will open.

I ran into a couple from Nagoya (pictured) that I seem to run into at least once a year. After telling me how much they love our site, they continued, “We used a picture of us that was taken last year by Snownavi for our New Year’s Card. We hope to get a good one again this year!” The groomed snow surfaces at the top of Usagidaira had similar soft, packed-powder conditions as Kurobishi, while from the midpoint down things firmed up a little.
