Today marked the opening of the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured)! As such, it’s now possible to ski all the way back to the gondola base station via the Nakiyama Slope. Winds were strong early in the morning and I was concerned that the upper lifts wouldn’t be able to run, but just as the gondola got moving at 8:00 the winds died down, and the Riesen Quad started on time at 8:10.

Despite snow falling late last night, there wasn’t much accumulation of new snow on the upper areas of the resort, possibly due to the effects of the strong wind. On Riesen (pictured), the hard-packed groomed surface was topped off with around 1cm of light, fresh snow. The ungroomed areas to the side still only had around 5cm of new snow.

I talked to a woman from the Kyoto area (pictured), who said she loves our site, and went on to tell me that she was visiting Happo on a trip with the Biwako Valley Mogul Team. She told me she was going to pose, and asked me to take her picture. It turns out the pose was inspired by a favorite LINE stamp of hers, of a skier wearing the same outerwear.

Slope conditions were reasonably good this morning, but the falling snow and fog from the middle to the top of the resort really limited visibility. As I skied lower, visibility slowly improved and things finally cleared up around the Usuba Slope (pictured). I should also mention that yesterday, 12/21 (Tue.), the Nakiyama 3 Triple began operating for the season, and the Nakiyama Public Course is now open.
