Despite the excitement brought on by the huge snow dump, strong northerly wind gusts above the Panorama Course caused the start of the gondola to be delayed by 8 minutes, and forced the Alpen Quad to suspend operation in the morning. A group of 4 skiers from Hakuba and Tokyo (pictured) told me they love our site, and continued, “We came for powder… but we’re happy there’s so much snow!”
[Usagidaira]
With the powder on Usagidaira and Kurobishi currently inaccessible, I headed over to the south side of Panorama’s Kokusai 3 Pair Lift (pictured). Around 10 to 15cm of fresh snow covered the moderately soft groomed areas, which wasn’t enough to get the feeling of floating on fresh powder, but cutting tracks through the light powder snow was definitely enjoyable.

The nicely soft, groomed snow surface of the Panorama traverse course (pictured) was topped off by 10 to 20cm of new snow. I saw several people sending up big powder sprays as they transitioned from the switchbacking traverse to the ungroomed areas. Strong north winds at the top of the resort continued, and the Alpen Quad lift remained suspended.

An announcement was made, informing skiers that even the lifts currently operating may need to be decelerated, temporarily stopped or suspended due to the windy conditions. The Kokusai 1 Pair Lift began operating today at 8:00, in order to transport skiers to the Panorama Course area. In other news, it is now forbidden to place skis, boards or other items in front of the ticket gate for boarding the gondola, in order to save your place in line, before 6:00. (※Items placed in line before 6:00 may be subject to removal.)
