Snow began falling at the top of the resort before early dawn, and at the bottom by around 7:00. Strong northwest winds continued to blow across the top of the mountain, including the occasional whirlwind. It was a harsh, cold morning with snow falling from above and being blown up from the ground.

In other news, the Hakuba Happo-One Ski School & Snowboard School will begin regular lessons for the season on 12/18 (Sat.) In addition, a Collaboration Special with National Ski Demonstrators Maruyama Takao・Maruyama Junya・Osaki Hayato will be held on 12/31 (Fri.). As of today, 12/15 (Wed.), there are still a few spaces available.

Conditions were similar on the Panorama Course, Kurobishi No. 2 Quad area and the start of the Usagidaira Slope (pictured), with a thin covering of new snow resting atop a moderately firm groomed surface. I spoke with a couple from Nara Prefecture (pictured), who told me they love Snownavi, and that it has been 2 seasons since they ran into a reporter. They continued, “We spent three nights out here, and today is our last day. The snow is great, and we’ve been having a wonderful time.”

There were times later in the morning when the clouds thinned and soft sunlight bathed the slopes, but the snow continued uninterrupted. By around 9:30 the second half of the groomed Usagidaira area had been ridden by a large number of skiers, and the surface snow carved up by their turns and the freshly fallen snow made for an interestingly soft mix. A number of leaves carried by the wind could be seen on the slope surface, but weren’t enough to cause any issues while skiing.
