In stark contrast to yesterday, where lifts were closed throughout the day due to strong winds, today was a beautiful, calm, sunny day perfect for being out on the slopes. The snow machines on Riesen and Nakiyama were running at full blast this morning, taking advantage of the huge drop in temperatures overnight. The great weather brought not only skiers to the gondola line this morning, but also those looking to do some snow hiking and backcountry skiing.

Snow machines were busy making snow on the Panorama Course this morning as well. Excluding the steep section on the southern side of the Kokusai No. 3 Pair Lift, Panorama’s widely-groomed snow surface (pictured) consisted of firmly packed wet snow conditions. I didn’t notice any exposed bushes, and got in some nice, speedy runs.

It was similarly firm, wet snow conditions on the groomed area paralleling the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad. I had no trouble digging in my edges and was able to link together smooth, consistent turns. A group of 4 snowboarders (pictured) who called out to me near the top of the lift saying they always check our resort reports, showed off some impressively sharp turns as they sped past.

Conditions over on the ungroomed areas paralleling the Kurobishi No. 3 Pair (pictured, background) and the Alpen Quad (1st photo, background), were decent, with 10 to 15cm of fresh soft snow covering over the hard uneven surface below, thanks to yesterday’s lift stoppage. The groomed part of Usagidaira was nicely firm at the top, and a little hard towards the middle and bottom.
