Happo-One / △90cm / Cloudy2021.Dec.10

The morning started out with high clouds and soft light. The groomed Panorama Course (pictured) featured a well-packed, wet snow surface that I found easy to ski. I noticed some areas of thinning snow cover on the steep section at the end of the run, but the poles placed in those areas by patrol to warn approaching skiers made them easy to spot and no issue to go around.

The best run I had this morning was over on the freshly-groomed, wide-open slope paralleling the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad (pictured). Similar to Panorama, it was well-packed wet snow conditions that allowed me to set my edges and make a series of smooth turns. A few intermediate to advanced skiers seemed to be skiing speedy laps there on repeat.

There on Kurobishi, Hitomi Konno a rider with Prana Punks Snowboarding was showing off sharp, snappy turns. In talking with her, she told me she was riding a new debut board for this season, the Easy Rider Special 153.5, and that she’s impressed so far and definitely recommends it. She said her outerwear was made by a local brand called LOCAL BOND, who is just getting serious about their business, and that she was sporting a new color for next season. She also mentioned that both brands are focused on producing products “made in Japan.”

Conditions were tough along the Kurobishi No. 3 Pair (pictured, background) and the Alpen Quad (3rd photo), where the ungroomed areas had a hard, bumpy, uneven surface. The hard base was exposed in some parts of the groomed area between the top and middle of Usagidaira. In other news, shuttle bus service will be operating on a temporary basis tomorrow and the day after.
