Happo-one / △121cm / Cloudy2021.Nov.29
After the heavy snowfall overnight and into the morning of 11/27 (Sat.), Happo registered another 10cm of new snow the following evening as well. No new snow has fallen since then, and the weather this morning was characterized by high clouds to the north, with slivers of blue sky peeking through. The snow surface along the Panorama’s beginner-friendly traverse course (pictured), which also opened on the resort’s first day of the season, was composed of moderately-packed powder and made for some good turns.

The area to skier’s left of the Kokusai 3 Pair Lift (pictured, northern aspect) was groomed from top to bottom and had similarly good packed-powder snow conditions! I noticed several advanced-level skiers speeding down the slope first thing in the morning.

It should be noted that although it is still only November, the Panorama Course has more than sufficient snow cover. That applies of course to the upper and middle portions of the run, but also the steep section towards the end (pictured.) I didn’t notice any exposed earth or brush anywhere. The southern side of Panorama from the top down to the center section was groomed to the width of between 3 to 4 grooming machines, later narrowing to the width of a single groomer towards the end. The snow in the ungroomed areas is still rather soft.

With these good conditions I got to wondering what was going on with the Usagidaira and Kurobishi Slopes. Both have plenty of snow, but it turns out that they haven’t been able to open because of a shortage of November staff. (*Conditions should make for a great opening on 12/1). One more important thing to note is that the HAKUBA MOUNTAIN BEACH (pictured), where crews could be seen clearing snow today, is going to remain closed for the duration of the winter season.
