It seems that yesterday, where even the resort was receiving rain instead of snow, might have been the end of the spell of warm low temperatures: this morning the white stuff was once again falling at the top of the mountain, though it was a dense, wet snow. The Usagidaira Slope (pictured) had between 2 and 5cm of new snow. Until around 8:45, stiff winds were blowing in from the south, carrying snowflakes with them. (*Including today, the base of the mountain has seen rain for 3 consecutive days).
[Usagidaira]
Occasionally, the slopes aren’t able to be groomed just after a period of sustained rain, and unfortunately today was one of those days. Over on Usagidaira’s southern side (pictured) the snow surface was relatively firm, but the heavy new snow caught my edges and made it difficult to turn at times. The forecasted rain sure seemed to be keeping people away from the slopes in the morning, with all three open areas being almost completely empty.

I had a brief conversation with a skier from Shiojiri (pictured, left), who told me, “I love your site! This is my friend from Osaka (pictured, right), we met through our interest in itaita [anime-inspired skis]. He came out yesterday and is planning to spend a total of 8 nights sleeping in his car. We’re both Happo season pass holders!” By the way, Happo season passes are a great deal this season, at only ¥35,000 for those 39 years old and younger.

Since there was only 1 to 2cm of fresh snow alongside the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad, I found it easier to ski than Usagidaira. Because of the conditions, I wasn’t able to tell much of a difference between conditions on what had been yesterday’s groomed and ungroomed sections of trail. If anything, I’d have to say that the ungroomed areas were a little more firmly packed. Currently, at 10:00, the snowflakes are shrinking in size, but are continuing to fall.
