We’re now within 2 weeks of the season closing date of 5/5 (Wed., holiday), but there’s still plenty of snow remaining; including even on the groomed south side of the Panorama Course (pictured) where no artificial snow has been used. From the early morning hours strong intermittent gusts of wind from the south blew across the slopes, and the soft snow surface made for slightly difficult skiing conditions.

It was similarly tough conditions on the groomed, gentle slope of the “Panorin” Course (the Panorama Course’s forest cat track) where in addition to the soft surface conditions there were also a number of small broken branches blown and scattered by the wind. Yet the combination of good grooming and few people meant that the corduroy-grooved snow surface lasted well into the day.

The wind was even stronger on the slopes above Usagidaira, which unfortunately led to the suspension of lift operation for those lifts other than the Gondola and Panorama Pair.
This didn’t stop people from hiking up the Usagidaira Slope (pictured) to get some extended turns on the soft, granular snow. As time passed the strong winds continued unabated, forcing the closure of the Panorama Pair as well around 9:00 a.m.

At the Usagidaira Terrace and along with Cafeteria Yeti, the Karuizawa Primo restaruant is still open for business. (*However, Primo will be closed on 4/21, 22 and 27). Pictured here is the “Verdola” pasta, where dried tomatoes, mizuna and anchovies provide a full, rich taste. (It comes with salad and a drink for 1,530 yen). Other food and drink options located along the resort slopes and still open include Pilar (*closed Tuesdays), Cafeteria Kurobishi (*open on Fri., Sat. & Sun.) and Usa Cafe (*open on Sat. & Sun.). Each facility is scheduled to open daily during the Golden Week holiday period, from 4/29 (Thurs.) to 5/5 (Wed.).
