One of the Hakuba Happo-One Ski & Snowboard School instructors (pictured, left) called out to me this morning, saying, “I always follow your reports! These snowboarders are junior members of the Hakuba Village Ski Club. We hold lessons regularly.” It was a cool morning under a cloudy sky on the Usagidaira Slope.

On the southern portion of the Usagidaira Slope (pictured), the surface layer of the moderately firm, groomed granular snow had already begun to soften up. Over on the Panorama Course the soft snow extended beyond just the surface layer, and each turn I took left deep impressions on the slope face.

I talked briefly with two skiers from Nagano’s Ina City (pictured) who told me, “We love your site. Today with the sun behind the clouds, it seems like these good conditions will last for a while.” I noticed a number of skiers and boarders taking repeat laps along the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad, where the groomed, granular snow surface was nicely firm.

Backing up a bit to the start of the day, conditions on the Riesen Slalom course were similar to those on Usagidaira, with the groomed, granular surface snow starting to soften already at the day’s outset. In fact, a man from Hakuba (picutred) who called out to me saying he often checks our site, went on to say, “It’s the end of March; that time of year where the slopes start to loosen up early in the day.” And just as he finished speaking, he skied away.
