Happo-one / ○250cm / Snow & Clouds2021.Mar.22

21032201_happoWith the consistent warm weather and frequent rainfall continuing since 3/18 (Thurs.), snow at the foot of the resort has been melting rapidly, forcing the closure of the base area routes leading back to the gondola and down to the Sakka Kitaone Quad. That leaves the Riesen → Nakiyama Public Course as the only option for returning on skis to the bottom of the mountain as of today. At the top of Happo light snow was falling, carried by a relatively strong westerly wind.

21032202_happoA thin layer of fresh, spring snow covered the groomed central aspect of the Skyline Course, where the granular snow surface was packed firmly from top to middle, loosening up slightly towards the end of the run. Two skiers from Okayama (pictured) greeted me, saying that they routinely use our site. They added, “Most of the snow at resorts in Kansai and to the west has melted, so we decided to come out to Hakuba.”

21032204_happoLarge mogul-like bumps covered the ungroomed slopes along the Kurobishi No. 3 Pair (pictured, background), along the Alpen Quad and in the Skyline area. The well-groomed granular snow surface of the Usagidaira Slope was topped off with a nice 2 to 3cm of fresh snow.
