It was a calm, sunny day with a spring like haze across the horizon. A couple of skiers started conversation with me, saying, “We always use your site. This morning we left our house at 3:30 a.m. to come skiing. The weather is fantastic, what a day!” The moderately firm, groomed granular snow surface of the Riesen Slalom Course made for a fun, speedy start to the day.

The groomed areas of Usagidaira featured similarly firm snow conditions early on, but after 30 minutes or so both there and Riesen began to soften up. Further up at the top of the resort, on the groomed Riesen Grat Course (pictured), snow was of the same granular quality as lower down the mountain, but the slope surface was firmer in comparison. Elsewhere, there were large moguls along both the Kurobishi No. 3 Pair and the Alpen Quad.

The groomed granular surface of the Panorma course was smooth and firm, and by the time I got there was already beginning to loosen up; a perfect combination for extremely pleasant skiing conditions. The Central Course was riddled with large moguls, while the snow on the groomed Shirakaba Slope was of the wet granular variety.

I spent some time talking to another pair of skiers, this time from Hakuba. They commented that they frequently check our resort reports, and on how the current streak of warm weather seems to be here to stay. Due to the excellent weather forecast for the day, there was a line of eager skiers, but also a large number of mountaineers waiting in line in front of the lift ticket office. By the way, the Happo resort reports are going to shift to a 3-per-week schedule for the remainder of the season, beginning on Mar. 12 (Fri.).
