Today was the third straight morning of “playing in the clouds.” Early on there were two distinct layers of clouds; one blanketing the mountain from the lower portion of the Central Course to the upper portion of the Panorama Course (pictured), and another stretching from the top to the middle of Usagidaira. I was able to look out over a sea of clouds spreading to the East from my position between the two layers around the Usagidaira Terrace.Despite it being a weekday, it felt like a good number of people hit the slopes early.

The groomed surface of Usagidaira (pictured) consisted of firmly packed granular snow. Despite the snow conditions being favorable for skiing, the thick layer of fog seemed to keep most people moving slowly and cautiously down the mountain and commenting on the poor visibility as they did.The steep ungroomed face along the Alpen Quad was marked by large, hard moguls throughout.

Along the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad (pictured), the widely groomed slope’s granular snow-covered surface was relatively firm and smooth throughout. Quite a few people could be seen skiing and boarding along the No. 2 Quad since the lift provides an easy-to-follow landmark even when visibility is compromised. Not long afterwards, around 9:00 a.m., the fog in the Kurobishi area quickly melted away and visibility improved greatly.

Skiing down to the end of the Panorama Course, I found it to be blanketed in fog once again. The cat track that skirts the side of Panorama (pictured) and most of Olympic Course II, as well as the gentle slope at the end of the Olympic Course II were all in similar condition with moderately firm groomed granular snow. The entire steep portion of the Olympic Course II was covered in hard surface bumps and undulations.
