The forecast for the last two mornings called for clouds on Friday and sun on Saturday, but both days ended up starting off with snow. Three skiers (pictured) called out to me saying, “Take our picture.” They continued, “It’s impossible to see anything, but at least the lifts weren’t affected by the wind.” Early this morning strong winds were blowing at the foot of the mountain, yet all resort lifts were able to get moving on time.

However, the fog was an issue. In addition, at the top of Usagidaira, a chilling wind was blowing and whipping the lightly falling snow around like a mini blizzard. The groomed surfaces along the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad (first photo) and the southern side of Usagidaira (second photo) were composed of fine but rough granular snow with around 1cm of fresh snow on top.

After heading as far down as the Skyline Course visibility improved to the point that it didn’t affect skiing. The middle, groomed aspect of the slope was composed of fine particles of rough granular snow topped with 1cm of new stop. The fresh dry snow covering the hard groomed surface softened things up and made for smooth, comfortable turns.

Early morning conditions were the same on the Panorama Course. In other news, tomorrow a “Kids Snow Running Class” will be held at the Nakiyama Snow Land. The workshop will be headlined by special guest M Takashi and open to children from age 3 up to 6th grade elementary school students. The event will focus on tips for running faster, staying fit and practicing good posture.
