The thin covering of clouds quickly dissipated, revealing a beautiful blue sky just as the slopes opened for business. Temperatures were quite cold again this morning and as a result the trees along the Panorama Course (pictured), the top of Riesen and the Usagidaira area were blanketed in picturesque hoarfrost. In addition to resort riders, I noticed a number of people heading out for winter mountaineering and backcountry skiing.
[Panorama Course]
Though mostly unnoticeable on the Usagidaira Slope, the wind at the top of the resort was blowing rather strongly.Conditions were good for skiing on the groomed Riesen Grat Course with firmly packed wet snow along the first half transitioning to a moderately firm surface along the second half (pictured). There were uneven, yet soft, bumps and tracks in the ungroomed areas.
[Riesen Grat Course]
The wet snow and firm groomed surface conditions were consistent throughout the Panorama Course, southern side of the Usagidaira Slope, along the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad and Skyline Course.Along the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad and Skyline Course small clumps of snow had formed around the edges of tracked areas, but they weren’t big or prevalent enough to affect sliding.
[Skyline Course]
From the top of the resort there were excellent views of the “Shirouma Sanzan” (Hakuba’s three major peaks, pictured) and Mt. Goryu and Mt. Kashimayarigatake further along the same ridge, as well as the Tokagushi range and Mt. Myoko to the northeast, and even Mt. Asama and Mt. Azumaya to the east. The Kitaone Forest CAT Track, as well as the Sakka and Shirakaba Slopes featured similar tightly packed groomed granular snow surfaces.
