Snow Plaza Sakka has been opening from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily since Monday, January 18th. (The restaurant itself is open from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.)The restaurant serves everything from the local Hakuba cuisine “ohyokkuri” to curry and rice bowls with Nagano’s famous “sanzoku-yaki” as well as cake, craft beer and more.Soft serve ice cream is also half price (200 yen) for 1 hour daily, between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m.

It was another beautiful and clear but windy morning…After the extended period of warm weather that lasted from 1/22 (Fri.) to 1/27 (Wed.), there have been numerous days with strong morning winds, primarily 1/29 (Fri.) to 1/31 (Sun.), 2/2 (Tue.) and 2/5 (Fri.) to 2/7 (Sun.).It was after 9:00 when the gondola was able to begin operation, and around 9:30 for Skyline 2 (pictured), the Alpen Quad and other lifts located on the top portion of the resort.

Temperatures were warm yesterday and today, and as a result the groomed snow was coarse and hard along the Kitaone forest cat track, Sakka Wave Course (pictured) and other areas at the base of the mountain.Additionally, the large, hard-packed bumps across the surface of the steep aspect of Kitaone seemed to be keeping most skiers and boarders away from the area during the morning.

Direct sunlight shining on the surface on the Sakka South Slope (pictured) began to loosen up the snow around 8:30 a.m.Despite it being a weekend, only a few people were lined up in the morning for the Sakka Kitaone Quad, likely due to the fact that you could tell the wind was strong even at the foot of the mountain. By 8:40 a.m. the Sakka No. 8 parking lot was only about 60% full.
