I expected the post-storm weather this morning to be calm and clear, but as I left Usagidaira Terrace I instead encountered fierce gusts of westerly wind whipping up snow and blowing it across the slopes.I also ran into a representative of the Ski Bum company (pictured here in the yellow vest), which is in charge of updating Happo’s facebook and other social media accounts this season. The company sells skis, skiing gear, apparel and other items online through its web shop.
[Riesen Slalom Course]
The Gondola, Nakiyama No. 3 Triple, Happo Riesen Quad, Panorama Pair and Sakka Kitaone Quad got rolling as scheduled, however the Alpen Quad and other lifts at the top of the resort were all temporarily suspended due to the strong winds.Conditions on the groomed Panorama Course (pictured) were excellent, with a firm yet soft fine powdery snow surface!

Just as the winds began to die down as I continued along the Panorama Course, a haze of cloud descended on the slopes, restricting visibility (pictured). Further down and out of the fog on the Olympic Course II, I enjoyed sliding across the 15cm of fresh, fluffy snow masking the thin traces of tracks underfoot.Conditions were decent overall on the groomed section from the tail end of Olympic II to the Sakka Slope despite some slightly rough patches.
[Panorama Course]
This year’s Happo Fire Festival is being broken up into three parts held over three days from 2/19 (Fri.) to 2/21 (Sun.).The festivities will commence on Friday the 19th at 7:30 p.m. with a torchlight ski procession and the lighting of the bonfire and continue on Saturday from 8:00 p.m. with a fireworks display.In addition, various small events related to the fire festival will be held on the 19th and 20th at resort restaurants, Hakuba Happo Onsen, Kids’ Park and other locations.
