The strong winds that had been blowing across the valley throughout the morning yesterday were gone, and on this day a cloudless blue sky spread out in all directions above us. “We love your site. What a fantastic day!,” was the greeting from 3 visitors from Yamanashi (pictured). In addition to those coming to ski the resort, the line of people waiting for the gondola prior to opening was also populated with mountaineers and those heading into the backcountry.

Temperatures were quite chilly across the entire mountain in the early hours of the morning, but by the time the lifts began operation it became a bit more bearable. The groomed aspect of the gentle slope at the top half of the Riesen Grat Course was composed of windswept, firmly packed powder snow. (* Though the hard, icy base was exposed in some areas.) The surface of the steeper slopes of the course’s bottom half also featured fine powder, though slightly less compacted. Conditions were good in both areas.

Due to the Grat Quad being unable to operate yesterday, the non-groomed area (pictured) was in full reset mode! The hard base was exposed across a small area at the start, but beyond that waited somewhere between 20 and 30cm of fresh snow with below the slightly wind-packed surface.

The groomed runs throughout the resort were all in excellent condition owing to the cold temperatures and new snowfall occurring since 1/29 (Fri.). Runs along the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad, Skyline Course, Kitaone traverse cat track, Olympic Course II and even down to the Shirakaba Slope were all marked by comfortable conditions.
