From 1/25 (Mon.) to 3/31 (Wed.) Happo and POW Japan are joining forces for a collaborative photo contest called ‘Insta Photo Contest x POW Japan” and based on the theme of protecting the beautiful winter snowscapes of Happo-One. In order to participate the first step is follow Happo’s official Instagram account, and then to upload and tag your Happo photos using the following hash tags – [#happoフォトコン #私たちには雪が必要だ]. By doing so you’ll automatically be entered into a drawing where 5 people receive a free set of two Happo lift tickets.

This morning’s weather was sunny and calm, with only a few thin clouds to the east. Warm weather has been hanging around since 1/22 (Fri.), but the north-facing aspect under the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad (Picture 1 and 2) was ideal groomed powder conditions.

One step lower down the mountain, the groomed snow of the Skyline Course was heavier “wet” snow, but it held together well and the skis slid well across the surface. Due to an elevated risk of avalanches, the Kitaone Traverse Cat Track (the road below the Skyline No. 2 Pair) was closed for the day in consideration of safety. That meant that in order to descend to the Sakka base area, the only options were to use the Sakka Kitaone Quad lift or the Olympic II Course.

The snow type and quality of the groomed slopes across the resort varied considerably in accordance with the direction of the aspect and the elevation. The south-facing Usagidaira route was tightly packed “wet” snow, while the panorama course was harder packed, snow of a finer consistency. It was easy enough to keep an edge and maintain control on the Panorama Course, enabling me to comfortably reach a decent speed.
