The day started out under a calm yet cloudy sky at the base of the mountain, but as I climbed in elevation I began to see raindrops appearing on the windows of the gondola.
At the upper portion of the Panorama Course (pictured), northerly winds accompanied relatively heavy rainfall. A customer confided in me, “I was hoping the rain would hold off until a little later in the day. It’s unfortunate.”

However, as the Alpen Quad kicked off operation at 8:30 a.m., the rain turned to sleet and by the Riesen Grat Quad, it was a wet snow that was falling. The groomed surface of Usagidaira (pictured) had a dusting of 1 to 2cm of fresh, moist snow. Conditions were rather technical with an uneven surface below and the wet snow that effectively put the brakes on attempts to gain real speed.

Thirty minutes later, the Panorama Course (pictured) would also see the rain turn to sleet. The Panorama and Olympic II Courses had softened up just right, and now my skis were sliding easily over the snow. With that said, it definitely seemed to be the least crowded day of the season so far.

A dreary cold day like today was the perfect chance to head over to Ramen Cha-Cha and have their Miso Chashu-Men! This ramen, with its rich miso base and specially-prepared slices of pork, was the manager’s recommendation. In other news, a case of COVID-19 infection was confirmed today in an employee of the Hakuba Happo-One Ski & Snowboard School. As a result, the school itself, as well as the Nakiyama Snowland, Nakiyama Center House and Sakka Adventure Park have been temporarily closed.
