It seems as if another massive cold wave is set to hit later today. Yet early this morning the sun was shining softly on the foothills and only light flutters of snow were occasionally falling on the Usagidaira area, carried by the northwesterly winds. That same, chillingly cold NW wind made the air at the top of the resort feel significantly colder than the reported temperatures suggested.

The tightly groomed courses along the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad lift (pictured) and in the Usagidaira area were covered with a thin layer of fresh, fine powder snow. We observed a number of intermediate to advanced riders taking advantage of the conditions with swift unbroken runs and smooth, deliberate turns from top to bottom.

The Skyline course, the Kitaone area and its traverse “cat track”, as well as the Sakka slope featured similarly satisfactory snow to the Kurobishi and Usagidaira areas described above. The well-groomed Olympic Course II also provided comfortable conditions and was marked by the same chilly air present higher up the mountain.

Even the snow on the Shirakaba slope at the base of the mountain was of a powdery quality that left little to complain about. The excellent state of the groomers and the feeling of the cold wind on the slopes today reaffirmed the expectations that the weather system moving in this afternoon will be of a similar size and substance as the epic storm that blitzed the area during the year-end and New Year holiday period.
