Over the last 4 days, the final preparations of a number of slopes have been proceeding smoothly, and the Omusubi area was opened on 12/21 (Mon.), followed by the Tenbo course on 12/23 (Wed.) The only powder area yet to be opened is Urakuro. The weather today was marked by calm, sunny skies with wispy clouds, and this was the first day of the season so far that the three main peaks of the Hakuba area (see photo) were clearly visible.

The full width of the slope along the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad (pictured) was immaculately groomed into tight rows of perfectly packed powdery corduroy! In these conditions edges bite and grip the snow well, enabling confident speed. It was impressive to watch intermediate and advanced skiers and riders fly down and lap the slope on speedy repeat using the No. 2 Quad.

The freshly groomed snow was packed tightly at the top of the Usagidaira slope yet slightly looser from the middle to the bottom, while the ungroomed area along the Alpen Quad was blanketed in moderately sized granules of snow.

The nicely compacted snow on the Panorama course also made for some great turns, and the steep, ungroomed slope lying at the middle of the Central course (pictured) featured some gentle bumps.
(*A portion of the slope to skiers right as well as the bypass course were groomed to about the width of a single groomer.) The temperatures were a little warm, but in the end it was possible to ski easily and comfortably down to the Shirakaba slope at the bottom of the resort on nice, powdery snow.
