“48th Happo One Fire Festival” was held at Nakiyama last night. It was sunny and warm in the daytime, but it was snowing at 7:00 pm when the festival started. There were various food stalls, including takoyaki, ikayaki, gyoza, udon, soba and hamburger. It was crowded with people, including international visitors.

Torch-running and Onbe-lightning were the main events in the opening ceremony. As instructors holding torches lined up, two children appeared and lighted the Onbe. Kagamibiraki was done at the stage. Japanese-sake, hot Calpis, and boar-nabe were served.

Happo Daiko was performed. I was impressed with the brave movement of drumsticks and the powerful sound of drums. Then, snow-groomers, snowmobiles, former Olympians, active demonstrators, and mascot characters gave their demonstrations. I heard people cheering.

Prizes were prepared at the lottery, including skis (OGASAKA) for 1st and 2nd prize. A man from Australia, who came Hakuba for the first time, won the 1st prize for this year. The fire festival which lasted about 2 hour ended with skyrockets.
