Hakuba Norikura / ◎170cm / Light Rain2021.Feb.02

Hakuba Norikura’s base is now nearly 100cm above what it was at this same time last season. In talking with some resort staff members, one of them exclaimed, “We have plenty of snow, but the slopes are almost shockingly empty. We’d love to welcome more guests!”Their “welcome pose” in the photo shows that same sentiment.Once the rain stopped, so too did the wind, and it was a quiet, warm morning.

The first half of the Highway Course featured a groomed, tightly packed wet snow surface, topped off with another 3cm of fresh, wet snow. That was just the right amount for my edges to take hold and to gain speed comfortably. The ungroomed second half of Highway had roughly 8cm of new snow.Conditions on the Kamoshika Course were good, with the slope in roughly the same state as the first part of the Highway Course.

I had a brief chat with three snowboarders from neighboring Hakuba Village (pictured). “I’m a big fan of your site,” said one of them. “The slopes are terribly empty, aren’t they? You must have been waiting a long time to for someone to ski past you.”The Wakaguri Central Slope and Wakaguri Rinkan Course were very well maintained, with the wet snow starting to loosen up nicely.

A group of three guests from Matsumoto stopped me to say they often check our resort reports. The man pictured in the middle said, “I bought an advance discount lift ticket for Hakunori from Snownavi, but I forgot to bring it with me today. I’ll have to come back.”Likely due to the forecast of rain, many guests were slow in arriving to the slopes.Even after 9:00 a.m., there were still plenty of areas where the slopes’ pisten-packed corduroy grooves remained untouched.
