The early morning sleet falling at the base area had turned to light rain by the time of the resort’s opening.
Today the inaugural ‘Chanmero Free Ride Open‘ was held on the slopes of the Expert Course.
Members of ‘Hakuba Freestyle Force‘ (pictured), a ski school specializing in freeskiing, were amongst the athletes competing.

The tournament organizer Takuma Oike (pictured left, wearing a blue jacket and khaki pants) kicked off the event with some opening words at 8:00 a.m. in front of Snow Drop.
According to him, the Chanmero Free Ride Open was designed to be a fun freeride competition that charges competitors to connect with nature, channel their inner selves and express those results through their line.

Going further up the mountain the light rain at the base turned to sleet by the middle of the Satomi Ridge Course, and to damp snow near the bottom of the Sky View Course (pictured).
The weather at the top of the resort was poor, with strong southerly winds and driving snow.
The 5cm of fresh snow was blown and crusted by the wind, and the hardened and irregular base made for extremely tough conditions.

The first session of the competition was held starting at 8:30 a.m. on the Expert Course, and at 10:30 the second session got going, with runs by skiers and snowboarders in the boys 12 and under category.
The exciting performances featuring jumps, technical lines and impressive recoveries were cheered loudly by spectators watching excitedly from the goal area.
