Tsugaike Nature Park / Sunny2021.Oct.04

This report on the Tsugaike Nature Park’s peaking fall foliage will focus on the furthermost parts of the park beyond the Ukishima Marsh. In the Yase-one area (pictured), where a cool breeze rose up from the valley below, the leaves of the ‘Sarasadodan’ (Enkianthus) shrubs were beginning to turn color. Some trees could even be seen with leaves running the spectrum all the way from pale green to bright red. Over by the lookout deck, the vibrant orange colors of the maple leaves caught my attention.

To reach the Tenbo Marsh, beyond the Ukishima Marsh, I took the eastern route via the Yase-one. When I arrived at 10:25 a.m., there were already quite a few people taking in the sweeping panoramic views of the peaks and the ‘Daisekkei’ snow field. I never grew tired of looking at the majestic mountains towering over the marsh dressed in shades of autumn, and I found myself content to stay there as long as time would allow.

Heading back towards the Mosen pond, to the area where snow remains into early summer (pictured), the fall colors were again spectacular. The ‘Dakekanba’ (Erman’s birch) in this area also still retained more of their yellow fall leaves than elsewhere. The red leaves of the ‘Nanakamado’ (Japanese rowan) around the Mosen pond stood out, despite the fact that they were beginning to fall.

In each of the marsh areas, the vibrant reds of the low-lying ‘Kuromamenoki’ (bog bilberry) bushes really left an impression on me. This was particularly true around the Watasuge Marsh (pictured), where the sunlight really seemed to enhance the beauty of the scene. Overall it seems that the progress of the autumn leaves is slightly ahead of last year and the colors should be even bolder by the coming weekend.
