Hakuba Oike / Cloudy & Sunny2019.Aug.25
It was cloudy at the foot but I left for Hakuba Oike, expecting that “Hopefully, I can get a fine view at the upper area”, judging from the live camera image. The fog sometimes came down and sometimes cleared at the trail, and I could sometimes see the boardwalk at Tengubara below my eyes from the eastern slope of Mt. Hakuba Norikura (shown in the photo).

The eastern slope of Mt. Hakuba Norikura is steep uphill slope with big rocks. I tried to take smaller steps and walked carefully although there were only a few loose rocks. Almost all people walked over the snow gorge, which was about 15 m long, without crampons as there was rope.

The wind was blowing at the ridge, which cooled me down and made me feel that the autumn was just around the corner. I arrived at the today’s destination, Hakuba Oike (shown in the photo), soon after I crossed the top of Mt. Hakuba Norikura. The ridge leading to Mt. Asahi was totally hidden in clouds, which made me insecure. However, the blue sky and the green slope leading to Raicho-zaka raised me up.

I had a chat with many visitors today, including a hiker who’s planning to walk along the ridge to Mt. Hakuba, and another hiker who’s planning to go to Toyama Prefecture, crossing Mt. Asahi. The breeze and the sunlight felt nice when I reached Hakuba Oike Sanso around 11 a.m. The Sanso was crowded with people taking breaks or early lunch.

You can both enjoy a distant view and clear water before your eyes at Hakuba Oike, which is about 2,379 m above sea level. I found a Japanese black salamander swimming in the pond when I went to a sandy shore in the rear of the camping site (shown in the photo).
