With a beautiful, cloudless blue sky, it was the perfect day to be out on the slopes. By 10:00 a.m. the early morning chill had dissipated, and it was warm enough to work up a sweat. The tightly packed groomed surface of the Paradise slope (pictured) meant that even with speed my edges bit and held well while carving.

Members of the Shinshu University Ski Club were out working on their technique. One of the members said to us, “This year’s Iwatake National Student Ski Competition is open to individual competition only this year, so we each need to put in the practice to place at the top of the rankings.” The New Paradise slope was almost entirely groomed, with the exception of the areas below the No. 5 Pair lift and to skier’s left.

The entire expanse of the Family area had also been groomed. The beautiful corduroy grooved slope was exposed to the intense morning sun, causing the surface of the snow to melt and moisten slightly. Yet even still, my skis rode well and I was able to pick up speed without any problem on the gentle slope.

With the absence of wind, the scenery surrounding lake Aoki was serenely reflected in its waters. Conditions on the Lake Down course were also pleasant and similar to those of the Family slope, with a sunlight-softened surface. A number of people could be seen lingering around the top of the No. Quad lift and taking in the views before starting their runs.
