Cortina / △290cm / Partly Cloudy2022.Mar.24

22032401_cortinaI ran into the children of a family from Shiga Prefecture, with the older sister (pictured, left) telling me, “We always use your site. Every year we come out for skiing during spring break. My father likes to be photographed, so he’ll be disappointed that he’s missing out.” Later I did manage to take a photo with the father and a cousin who came back and joined the group.
[Ipponmatsu Course]
22032402_cortinaThe clouds began to melt away around 8:30, with periods of alternating sun and shade following. The Ipponmatsu Course (1st photo) and Ikenota Slope (pictured) featured moderately-firm, groomed granular-snow surfaces topped off by 1 to 2cm of new, wet snow, and were good for fun, speedy runs. I talked briefly with a family from Chiba Prefecture (pictured, center) who mentioned that they occasionally check our reports and that, “Today is the first day of our 3-day 2-night stay at the Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba.”
[Ikenota Slope]
22032403_cortinaBy around 30 minutes after the resort opened, the slope surfaces began to noticeably wet and loosen, and I found some difficulty with sliding on gentle slope at the end of Ikenota. Over on the Hiedayama Rinkan Course (4th photo), conditions were good with 2 to 3cm of new snow covering the well-groomed granular-snow surfaces.
[Ikenota Slope]
22032404_cortinaI had a quick chat with a local Otari Elementary School student (pictured) who was the first one on the No. 4 Pair this morning, and who mentioned, “My parents dropped me off and today I’m skiing on my own.” Just after that, I watched as he bravely dropped in to the self-responsibility tree area alongside the No. 4 Pair! The Hiedayama Course was in pretty good shape, with 2 to 3cm of new wet snow atop the moderately-firm undulating base.
