Cortina / △270cm / Mixed Rain & Snow2022.Mar.18
Last night’s rains seemed to be coming to an end around 8:00 at the bottom of the resort, but began to pick back up in intensity at around 9:00. I spoke with a group of 4 mothers (pictured) from here in the village of Otari, who told me they loved our site, and added jokingly, “We’re ‘irresponsible moms’ who are out skiing and having a good time while our kids are in daycare.” I’m sure they’ve more than earned a break from raising kids and taking care of their households!

The groomed Ikenota Slope and Ipponmatsu Course (pictured) featured a slushy, granular-snow surface. Those conditions caused my edges to sink deep into the snow, but my skis still slid well, and I found it easy to maintain control. Due to the possibility of avalanches, the Wasabidaira Slope and No. 6 Pair lift were closed.

Wet snow was falling at the top of the resort, carried by strong southerly winds. There was around 3 to 5cm of fresh snow covering the soft, groomed granular-snow surface of the Hiedayama Rinkan Course (pictured). The soft, undulating base of the Hiedayama Course 1 also had between 3 and 5cm of new snow, while it was a mixed bag of conditions on the Itadaira Course. Some areas had snow drifts with as much as 10cm of new snow accumulated, while others had a relatively firm, uneven and exposed granular-snow base.

I caught up with a skier from Kanagawa Prefecture (pictured, center), who told me that he always checks our reports, and added, “I’m fortunate enough to be working remotely and based nearby, so I’ve been able to stay and ski for quite a while. The university-student son (pictured, right) and his friend (pictured, left) are taking advantage of the Yuki Maji! 19 promotion, and skiing for free.” With the less than ideal conditions, it was a very quiet start to the day.
