Tsugaike Nature Park / Sunny2022.Sep.25

22092501_tsugaikeIt was a sunny fall Sunday at the Nature Park today. As of the 8:00 opening, the temperature was still in the single digits, but with no wind to speak of and strong sunlight shining down, I was able to spend my time in the park comfortably. The temperature dropped below freezing overnight, and traces of frost could be seen in the shaded sections of the boardwalk around the Mizubasho marsh.

22092502_tsugaikeWith the back to back 14th and 15th typhoons of the season bringing continuous days of rain and clouds across Japan, the fall colors of Chubu Sangaku National Park’s Tsugaike Nature Park are progressing roughly a week behind the pace of last year. Leaves are in the early stages of turning color around the Ukishima and Tenbo marsh areas, as well as the Yase-one ridge area. In each of the marsh areas throughout the park, the low-lying leaves of the Kuromamenoki (Bog bilberry) are now a beautiful shade of reddish purple.

22092503_tsugaikeNanakamado (Japanese rowan, pictured), Kaede (maples) and Okamenoki (scarlet leaved viburnum) are changing colors throughout the park, but the current state of autumn colors varies greatly depending on the location within the park, even amongst the same variety of trees; with some yet to turn, some partially turned, and others fully transitioned to their autumn shades. On the direct route between the Ukishima marsh area and the Yase-one ridge, the red berries of Gozen tachibana (creeping dogwood) really stood out.

22092504_tsugaikeI spoke briefly with the mother of a family from Saitama prefecture (father and child pictured), who said that they scheduled a 2-day, 1-night trip to the area after seeing the favorable weather forecast. She said they were going to be staying overnight in the camping area. In other news, the Tsugaike Ropeway opens at 7:00 today, on 10/1 (Sat.), 10/2 (Sun.), and over the three days from 10/8 (Sat.) to 10/10 (Mon.).

*Currently, repair work is underway on the small bridge at the entrance of the Mizubasho Shitsugen and on a 120-meter section of wooden boardwalk on the eastern side of the Watasuge Shitsugen. The completion date for both sections is still undetermined.
