Tsugaike Nature Park / Sunny2022.Sep.16

The Tsugaike Nature Park, located within the Chubu Sangaku National Park, is renowned as one of the top destinations in Japan for fall colors. Nanakamado (Japanese rowan) and Okamenoki (scarlet leaved viburnum) are expected to lead the way and begin turning red around 9/19 (Mon., holiday), along with pockets of yellows and oranges of Dakekanba (Erman’s birch) and Kaede (maples). Colors are expected to peak during the “Tsugaike Nature Park Fall Color Week” from 9/23 (Fri., holiday) to 10/2 (Sun.).

While the early fall air at elevation felt refreshing, the heat from the sun was intense, and I removed my jacket as I headed towards the furthest reaches of the park. The low-lying shrubs and grasses of the Mizubasho, Watasuge and Ukishima (pictured) marsh areas have begun to turn color, and appeared as a yellow carpet spreading out across the ground. I crossed paths with a hiker who told me that they always look forward to our reports, and encouraged me to keep up the good work.

Upon arrival at the observation deck at the far end of the park I struck up conversation with a family of three from Tokyo (pictured), who said, “The weather is great, isn’t it? When we came 11 years ago the weather was terrible, and we’re happy to get our revenge today.” I also spoke with a couple from Kyoto who mentioned that they had climbed Mt. Hakuba Norikura yesterday and stayed overnight at the Tsugaike Sanso. They told me that the walk through the Nature Park had more climbing than they expected and that they were pretty worn out.

The forest alongside the Tsugaike Ropeway has also begun to turn to subtle shades of yellow (pictured). The morning’s first ropeway car featured fantastic views of the Ushiro-Tateyama mountain range ahead and an impressive sea of clouds behind. I had a chat with a customer who told me, “Today I’m going to stay overnight at the Hakuba Oike Sanso. It seems that the good weather is going to hold up until tomorrow. I’m looking forward to seeing the sunrise tomorrow morning.”

*Currently, repair work is underway on the small bridge at the entrance of the Mizubasho Shitsugen and on a 120-meter section of wooden boardwalk on the eastern side of the Watasuge Shitsugen. The completion date for both sections is still undetermined.
