The winter solstice falls on December 22 (Sun) this year. The sunrise is getting late day by day, and it was at 6:04 today (Oct.23). I saw the beautiful red mountain and sky in the early morning, which is called morgenrot, at Hakuba Ohashi over Matsukawa river.

It was foggy around Grand Quad Station (1,800 m above sea level) before Gondola started working. Meanwhile, it was clearing up in the upper area. The first snow of the season, which fell on October 22 (Tue). covered the northern slope of Mt. Goryu (the left in the photo).

The autumn leaves at their best between an altitude of 1,200 m and 1,400 m. The color gradient from the white of clouds and snow on the ridge, the red and yellow of autumn leaves, to the green of leaves looked beautiful when I looked down the northern side of the swamp from Happo One Nature Trail. The sunshine was warm, and there was no wind. It felt nice wearing a long sleeve shirt during trekking.

I had a chat with four people from overseas, who lives in Hakuba Village, around No.3 Cairn. “Hi, Snownavi is very famous now. You know, snowboard season is coming! We’re super excited”, they told me, looking at the snow over the ridge.

Dakekanba trees shed their leaves and their white trunks were bare, which made me feel that the winter was just around the corner. By the way, I did not see frost nor ice around Shimo-no-kaba today. Happo One Nature Trail (Happo Alpen Line, Kurobishi Line) will be closed on October 27 (Sun).
