Our sunny May ended and it has been cloudy these days because of the easonal rain front which is moving up to the north from the Pacific Ocean. The rainy season began in the southern area of Kyushu around May.31 (Fri) as normal. It is likely to start this weekend in Hakuba according to the weather forecast.

It was a bit chilly to wear a T-shirt with the temperature at +17℃, however, I got warm as I started trekking. The gentle breeze from the southeast felt nice at Shakujii Cairn as I was sweaty. There were lots of small pink Yukiwari-sou flowers, which were pretty.

Not only Yukiwari-sou but also Miyama Azuki Giku (shown in the photo) and Harurindo flowers were at their best along Nature Trail. I also found beautiful yellow Kiji Mushiro flowers and the field was “a mass of spring alpine plants”. There were Mizubasho flowers too around Kamaike Marsh (shown in the first photo).

The remaining snow was firm and ok to walk on between the restroom (*still unusable) and Happo Cairn as well as around Happo-ike Pond. I enjoyed walking along the dry course with my trekking shoes.

About 90% of Happo-ike Pond surface was still covered with snow. Some people were taking pictures of the emerald blue water and snow. The pond started to get crowded around 10 a.m. I saw some having lunch at the pondside or around No.3 Cairn.
