Happo Alpen Line (Gondola, Alpen Quad & Grat Quad) has opened at 8 a.m. June 3 (Sat)! It was a beautiful sunny day without clouds in the early morning at Kamaike Marsh and Hakuba Sanzan was reflected on the small pond. Snow thawed early this season and Mizubasho (skunk cabbage) were already past their peak.

Boardwalk is closed so far. Ridge Trail is only available for trekking. It was crowded even on the first day. I saw many climbers with big rucksacks and families with small children. There was no snow left up to No.2 Cairn. The trail and rocks were dry and I could walk comfortably.

Alpine plants are blooming early this year, compared to the previous year. Miyama-azumagiku (in the photo) and Yukiwariso were already at their best. Harurindo was also at their best around Shakujii Ciarn and Umehatazao were blooming beautifully around No.2 Cairn.

The clouds started to appear in the sky at around 9:30 am and the sunlight was started to block for a long time. There was some snow left between No.2 Cairn and Happo Cairn. Some points of the trail were muddy because of melted water. However, the snow was firm and I could walk on them comfortably.

Happo-ike Pond was still covered with lots of snow. There was about 20 cm of snow even at the edge of the pond. However, it seems to be melting 4-5 days earlier than last year. Many people were taking a break around No.3 Cairn or the pond, enjoying the gentle northeast wind. By the way, Kita-one Kogen Highland will be closed from tomorrow, June 3. It will re-open on July 14 (Sat).
