The Tsugaike Ropeway Spring Service is set to kick off on 3/12 (Sat.)! This morning I ran into 2 women (pictured) from Tokyo and Gifu, who told me, “We were classates in elementary school. Today we met up at Tsugaike for some skiing.” The slopes themselves were bathed in soft morning light that penetrated the thin, streaking clouds.
[Tsuga-no-mori Slope]
The Tsuga-no-mori Slope (1st photo), and the Gotemba course just below it, featured moderately-firm, groomed wet-snow surfaces that had feeling of powder snow. Three snowboarders who grew up in neighboring Hakuba Vilage (pictured) greeted me saying, “We love your site. The snow is starting to soften up, but conditions are still good and we’re having a great time!”
[Han-no-ki Slope]
The well-packed wet-snow of the Han-no-ki Slope (pictured) had begun to soften slightly, and I noticed occasional clumps of snow forming across the snow surface, but I was still able to enjoy a fun, fast run from top to bottom. Later on Han-no-ki I rant into pro mountain runner Masato Kamishohara, who told me, “I always check your reports! I’m out here training for trail running / skyrunning.” (Unfortunatley, I wasn’t able to get a good photo.)

Over on Oya-no-hara, I was impressed by how both first-timers and beginners were able to coexist peacefully while sharing the same slope. The relatively-soft, groomed wet snow was perfect for practicing since falling wasn’t painful. In other news, on 3/13 (Sun.), the globally-recognized A DAY FOR JAKE, a celebration of the legacy of one of the founders of snowboarding, will take place and the Salomon・Atomic Station on the 2nd floor of Village Tsugaike will be handing out stickers to commemorate the day.
