Tsugaike Kogen / ◎335cm / Snowy2022.Jan.18
After the sunny weekend on 1/15 (Sat.) & 1/16 (Sun.), we hopped right back into “snow mode” yesterday. Another powerful, winter low-pressure system brought significant snow this morning, and I encountered brisk, chilly winds from the north along with dry snow falling heavily as I exited the gondola. Snow removal efforts delayed the start of the Tsuga No. 2 Pair, so I headed directly to the ungroomed area under the Han-no-ki No. 3 Quad lift.

As I had hoped, I was met with around 40cm of fluffy, new snow! Everyone seemed to be enjoying their runs floating on the fresh powder, despite occasionally bottoming out on the firm, slightly uneven base below. I could hear skiers shouting with joy as they dropped in.

On the groomed areas of Han-no-ki, it was soft powder snow conditions on the top portion running alongside the Han-no-ki High Speed Pair, with a slightly firmer packed-powder surface stretching from the middle to bottom portions (pictured) of the run. Both areas were topped off with around 3 to 4cm of light, new snow. With every edge I cut, a soft cloud of snow rose above the surface, testifying to the excellent quality of the snow.

The often-overlooked Maruyama Slope (pictured), seemed to be overlooked once again this morning. The wide slope area, and even surface were well groomed, with around 5cm of new snow on top, making for excellent conditions. I was impressed by the Tsugaike Ski School instructor and their advanced students who were making sharp, technical turns as they skied down.
