With heavy snow settling on the resort from 12/30 (Thurs.) to 1/1 (Sat.), Tsugaike’s official snow depth is now at a whopping 265cm, 35cm above what it was a year ago in what was also a good snow year. The clear skies this morning pushed the temperatures at both the top and base of the resort below -10℃, but the strong sunshine began to warm things up and by the start of business I felt comfortable.

The conditions of the snow on the groomed slopes across the resort was fantastic, with the perfect powder snow squeaking as I walked! The surface temperature of the moderately soft groomed run alongside the Han-no-ki High Speed Pair (pictured) was almost too low first thing in the morning, as my skis were sticking a bit at first. After gaining a little momentum though, the friciton seemed to lessen and I was able to slide normally at speed.

I found the groomed areas from the middle (pictured) to the end of Han-no-ki as well as Shirakaba to have a slightly more compact surface than alongside the Han-no-ki High Speed Pair. Starting up at the ridgeline of the Northern Alps with the blue sky behind, I could see strong winds whipping up snow like clouds of smoke.

I talked with a couple (pictured) from Saku City in Nagano Prefecture, who called out to me saying they love our site. They continued, “The weather finally cleared. The snow quality is fantastic, and the edges stick to and bite into the snow surface with ease; it’s a great day for carving!” The Champion, Oya-no-hara and Karamatsu Slopes were lively, with skiers and snowboarders taking advantage of the holiday blue skies.
