The calm, clear, bright sky provided excellent views of Hakuba’s three major peaks (Hakuba Sanzan) as well as the more distant mountains of the Ushiro Tateyama range from the Tsuga-no-mori Slope, and even from the window of the gondola. Before the resort opened, plenty of mountaineers and backcountry skiers and boarders could be seen mixed in with the crowd in line for the gondola.

Conditions were excellent on the Tsuga-no-mori Slope (first photo) and the Han-ko area along the Han-no-ki High Speed Pair (pictured) with a firm groomed surface of fine, dry powder snow! Further down around the steep slope at the mid-point of the Han-no-ki course the snow was noticeably less dry and by the end of the run had changed to a coarser corn snow. Yet even as the snowpack changed, it was good skiing from top to bottom.

The TG PARKS terrain park reopened with a new layout on 2/11 (Thurs.), and I was impressed with the build quality of each item. The park now consists of a full lineup of 8 kickers (12m x 2, 6m x 3, 3m x 3), 4 rails, hips, surf ride rollers, a banked slalom course, 3 table tops, a regular bank, waves, 3 tubes (pictured) and more!

The groomed surfaces of the Maruyama Slope (pictured) and the Oya-no-hara Slope began to loosen up early on in the day. Visitors to the resort were quick to arrive and by around 9:30 a.m. the Champion parking area was full and both the western and eastern sections of the central parking lot were nearly full.
