The first Saturday of February turned out to be a perfect day to hit the slopes. As of 7:45 a.m., the Oya-no-hara (pictured) and Champion Slopes were bathed in soft, refreshing sunlight and the well-groomed, fine wet snow surfaces let out their familiar squeak when walked upon. The period from Jan. 22 (Fri.) to Jan. 27 (Wed.) saw consistently warm temperatures, but since then weather has reverted to shorter cycles of warm and cold days.

The Tsugaike Junior Cup is taking place over two days, today and tomorrow, on the Shirakaba Slope. Today the giant slalom competition for 5th and 6th grade elementary girls kicked off at 9:00 a.m. The 3rd and 4th graders who were set to compete later on (pictured, foreground) were a mix of smiles and nerves.

The Tsugaike Junior Cup competition area is sectioned off on the skier’s left side of the slope, so it is still possible for visitors to ski or board the Shirakaba Slope. Conditions on the top of the course could be described as moderately-packed fine powder snow, but further down the quality gradually transitioned to a denser, wetter snow.

At the top of the resort, occasional strong gusts of northerly wind could be felt. The groomed sections of the Tsuga-no-mori and Han-no-ki (pictured) Slopes were in great shape, with packed powder conditions. Visitors arrived to the resort early this morning, and by 9:00 a.m. the corduroy grooves left by the grooming machines had mostly faded away, but the slopes were still in good shape and made for smooth skiing.
