It was an amazing day to be on the mountain, with exquisite tracks being drawn one after another across the meticulously-manicured slopes, all against the backdrop of a perfect blue sky! The firm, wet-snow surface of the super-wide, flatly-groomed Ura Taro Family East Slope (pictured) was great for smooth skiing. This north-facing slope has Sugadaira’s most consistent snow conditions throughout the season, and is a favorite of advanced skiers and riders.

In contrast, the Omote Davos Slope (pictured) on the opposite side of the road has a more laid back vibe, and attracts mostly beginners. On this day it featured a similarly-firm, groomed wet-snow surface. With temperatures climbing quickly, the horizon off towards Mt. Neko and Mt. Asama grew somewhat hazy.

I spoke with 4 high school students from Tomi City (pictured), who told me, “Usually we head over to Yunomaru, but we didn’t have access to a car today, so we took the local bus here to Sugadaira. What a beautiful, sunny day.” The surfaces of Omote Taro (pictured) and Hinode were more hard-packed than Ura Taro, making them good for gaining speed.

I also talked briefly with an instructor from the Smile Snowboard School (pictured), who greeted me by saying, “I always check your reports, and my wife does as well. If I get my picture in your report she’ll be really happy! Also, our school is hosting our 10th Annual Smile Cup10 on 3/12 (Sat.) and 3/13 (Sun.). The ‘Obuse de Flea Market in Sugadaira Kogen’ will also be held at the same time. We have prize money prepared for the Smile Cup, and there is even a chance to participate in a jan-ken (rock, paper, scissors) tournament and win ¥100,000.”
