Shiga Kogen / ○260cm / Sunny2022.Apr.11

22041101_shigaBeyond 4/4 (Mon.), there are 9 resorts across Shiga Kogen that remain open for skiing: Terakoya (Sat. & Sun. only), Ichinose Diamond (Sat. & Sun. only), Ichinose Family, Takamagahara Mammoth (possible to pass through Tannenomori), Yakebitaiyama, Okushiga Kogen, Kumanoyu, Yokoteyama, and Shibutoge. Kumanoyu (pictured) is still going strong with a 250cm base, and weekday operation sees the First and Second pair lifts running, while the Third Quad is also scheduled to operate on weekends and during the Golden Week holidays.

22041102_shigaOn the groomed, granular-snow surface of the Umanose Course (pictured) I was greeted by a skier telling me, “Good morning. The snow conditions are still really good first thing in the morning, as you would expect at Shiga Kogen.” Despite the Third Quad operating only on weekends and the Fourth Pair being closed for the season, the nearby runs such as the Third A Course and Third Beginner Course, as well as the Fourth A Course, Fourth Event Course and Fourth Beginner Course can be reached and skied via the Second Pair.

22041103_shigaI caught up with 2 skiers from Tokyo and Yamanashi, who told me, “We love your site. Today we came out to participate in the Fumio Hirasawa Ski Session. The weather is amazing and we can even see Mt. Myoko.” I noticed a lot of people working on linking careful and deliberate turns on the First Shirkaba Course (pictured) early in the morning.

22041104_shigaI spoke with a snowboarder from Nagano City who had completed the mogul course below the First Pair, who said, “I come out to Shiga Kogen every week. I love riding moguls in the spring, however, the moguls here at Kumanoyu are shaped primarily by skiers and are pretty technical for snowboarders.” There is also a line of moguls at the top of the Second A Course (pictured, background). The snow surfaces across all courses had softened and turned to enjoyable spring slush by 10:00.
