This morning I talked with the father of a family from Mie Prefecture (pictured, far left) who told me, “I love your site! Yesterday we skied at Goryu then spent the night at our favorite spot – Mountain Lodge Wiz. Today we’ll ski here at Kashimayari until the afternoon, then head back home.” The weather starting out was warm, with overcast skies.
[Course 3: Kashima]
The slopes were lively from the start of business, mostly due to groups of elementary school students taking ski lessons. The granular snow surfaces of the groomed Kashima Slope (first photo above) and Maruyama Slope, as well as the bottom portion of 1-C (pictured) were soft and slushy. Each of the three courses had areas with thinning snow and exposed ground, but snow coverage was more than enough to ski safely and comfortably.
[Course 7: Maruyama]
Over on the Kurosawa Slope (pictured) and Course 5-A (pictured, 4th photo), the groomed, granular snow surfaces were beginning to soften up, but still somewhat firm. Despite the dirty appearance of the snow, it was good cruising conditions. Around 9:00 a.m. strong southerly winds began to blow, and within a half an hour later it began to rain.
[Course 2: Kurosawa]
I spoke with an instructor from an Osaka-based nature school (pictured, 2nd from right) who said, “I love your reports! We’ve been doing lessons for the last 3 days, since Friday the 26th.” After chatting with their teacher, I asked the students if they were having fun, if they had improved and if they would like to come back; and the answer to each of my questions was an emphatic “yes” from every one of the kids.
