This morning I ran into the proprietress of Ramen Tottsuan (pictured) at HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR. She told me that today she was in cosplay as the character Mejiro McQueen from the popular smartphone gaming app Umamusume. Overall it was a cloudy across much of the sky on this mild Sunday morning, with occasional period of sunshine.

Today, the Japanese Ita Board Association (JIBA) was putting on an event (pictured) at Iwatake! I spoke briefly with a member of the association who told me that they had reduced the scale of this year’s event once again, considering the current state of the pandemic. Yet, as members of the group slowly gathered and posed for the photo, I could feel the passion for “ita boards” and cosplay.

It was granular-snow surface conditions today across the entire resort’s groomed runs. With that said, both the surfaces of the South Slope (pictured) and the top of the Sunny Valley Course were relatively firm with the exception of a thin, loose layer on top, and I found it easy to set my edge and control my skis. The loose layer was noticeably deeper and softer on the Sawa Course and East Slope, and conditions were even more spring-like from the middle of Sunny Valley and below, with the slushy snow slowing my sliding.

Beginning at 10:00 this morning next to the gondola base station, a Snowboard・Binding Test Ride Event put on by Hakuba Sports was taking place. I caught up with a woman from Gifu Prefecture (pictured, right) who was participating in the event, and told me, “I always check your reports! They have a board here that a rider for DRAKE recommended to me, so I’m trying it out.” Hakuba Sports will also be putting on the same event at Kashimayari on 3/19 (Sat.) and 3/20 (Sun.).
