The 6th Annual Hakuba Paradise Slalom competition kicked off at 8:50 a.m. this morning. With more than 250 people signed up for the event (including double entries), the starting area was full of people. The course included a combination of natural and man-made terrain and took athletes from the starting gate on the Kamo4 Slope, through 4 banks, and exited onto the East Slope.

For this competition, competitors were allowed 2 runs, with the time from their fastest run taken. First thing in the morning, the slope surfaces were quite firm and my skis slid easily, but with the strong sunlight conditions began to soften up. Every one of the athletes in the competition received a complimentary Red Bull, original keychain, 100 yen discount coupon for Ramen Tottsuan and a ticket for free entry to the Iwatake no Yu onsen. At the conclusion of the competition, a closing ceremony was scheduled to be held at 5:15 p.m. in the parking lot.

Amongst the competitors was Yuka Fujimori (pictured), who represented Japan at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, placing 7th in Big Air and 9th in Slopestyle. She seemed a bit nervous prior to the start, but as soon as she hit the course she laid down an impressive performance. I also caught a glimpse of Chika Tsuboi of ‘Chill Life’ and Mizuki Takeuchi from the snowboard team KAGAYAKING.

Early this morning the groomed snow on the South Slope was quite hard, while on the East Slope it was a firm mix of wet and granular snow. Though there were areas along the South Slope, Sunny Valley Slope and Paradise Slope where the ground was exposed, I was still able to ski down to the base of the mountain without problem. This report is the last one of the season for Iwatake. Thanks for your patronage of our site and ski area reports again this season.
